Which painkiller can help with a sore throat?
There are various types of painkillers that differ in active ingredients. At KNO-winkel, we offer Sinaspril liquid paracetamol, Strepfen lozenges, and Strepfen Throat Spray. Sinaspril and Strepfen are both medicines, but contain a different type of painkiller.
Sinaspril contains paracetamol and is suitable for children aged 5 and older. The medicine has pain-relieving and fever-reducing effects and is intended for pain and fever associated with the flu and colds, including sore throat.

The two Strepfen variants contain flurbiprofen. This is an anti-inflammatory painkiller (NSAID). Both medicines differ in dosage form and age limit.
Strepfen Lemon and Honey is a lozenge for the relief of throat complaints, such as sore throat and swelling. The medicine is intended for short-term use and is suitable for adults and children over 12 years of age.

Please note : Strepfen contains flurbiprofen. This is an anti-inflammatory painkiller belonging to the group of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). These medicines are not suitable for everyone. Therefore, before use, check the warnings and when you should not use the medicine on the product page.
Are you mainly suffering from an itch or mild irritation? Then a soothing throat spray such as Mellosan (a medical device) might be better suited to your symptoms.
What can you do yourself for a sore throat?
For a sore throat, you can do a number of things yourself to alleviate the symptoms:
- Drink something cold regularly, such as cold water.
- Suck on a licorice, sour candy, or other candy.
- Get enough rest, especially if you have a fever or don't feel well.
- Rest your voice and talk as little as possible. Preferably do not whisper.
- Do you smoke? Then try to quit smoking.
- You can optionally gargle with salt water. Dissolve one level teaspoon of salt in a glass of water and gargle with this up to four times a day.
These measures can alleviate the symptoms, but do not always eliminate the cause of a sore throat.
When do you go to the GP?
Contact your GP if you have a sore throat:
- a child becomes increasingly ill or is short of breath;
- a young adult has a severe throat infection and difficulty swallowing;
- you use inhaled medicines or have a weakened immune system;
- you develop a skin rash on your face or torso, painful joints, or a severe sore throat;
- you suffer from thrush, canker sores, mouth ulcers, inflamed gums or bad breath;
- the sore throat or hoarseness lasts longer than 10 days, or you have a fever for longer than 3 days.
Are you unable to drink or swallow, open your mouth normally, experience shortness of breath, or are you rapidly becoming sicker? Then contact your GP or out-of-hours GP service immediately .
