What is an allergy?

An allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction of your immune system to allergens. Allergens cannot harm your body, so people without allergies do not suffer from any problems. Are you allergic? Then your body sees these allergens as dangerous invaders and actively fights the allergens. For example, this may cause you to sneeze, your nasal mucosa to swell and/or your eyes to water.

Types of allergy

There are many different types of allergies: you can be allergic to certain foods such as nuts, or you can have a contact allergy where your skin has a severe reaction to a certain substance. In the field of ENT we also see a number of common allergies.

This causes complaints such as watery/itchy eyes, sneezing, a stuffy nose and more.
